THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CONSIDERING ATTIC CONVERSIONS IN DUBLIN

Updated: May 19, 2023

Are you considering adding an attic conversion to your home in Dublin? Knowing what to consider before getting in touch with a company can significantly help you both.

This will allow you to know how much space you have and whether you need planning permission or not. At A Giffney and Sons, we are happy to help you with the questions you need to consider when looking for an attic conversion.

Can you convert the space in my attic?

If you are considering an attic conversion in your home, one of the main things to consider is the current size of your attic. We recommend measuring your roof before contacting us to give us a rough idea of whether your attic conversion is possible.

To measure your attic, firstly measure the width, then the length and you also need to measure the roof's pitch.

Do you need planning permission?

When converting your attic, it is important to know whether you need planning permission for this build. You can do two possible attic conversions: a ‘habitable’ conversion or a ‘non-habitable’ conversion.

A ‘habitable’ conversion, as the name states, is a place that you could live in. For this attic conversion, you will need at least 2.2metres in height for 50% of the space. With this attic conversion, you do need planning permission.

A ‘non-habitable’ conversion is a place you could not possibly live in. For this attic conversion, you need the space size to be smaller than 2.2 metres in height in 50% or more of the area. This attic conversion would not need planning permission.

Do you need drawings from an architect?

At A Giffney and Sons, we are happy to work from an architect’s drawings if that is what you would like. We have an expert design team who can design the layout of your attic conversion as part of our Dublin attic conversion package. Our design team has created hundreds of attic conversions throughout County Dublin, so we can assure you that you are in safe hands!
